The Supreme Court permitted resumption of iron – ore mining in Goa with a temporary cap of 20 million tonnes per annum.
The bench took this decision keeping in mind the livelihood of people. This step has been taken to restore livelihood as the two main sources of economic growth in Goa are mining and tourism. Along with this resumption, the Supreme Court has prohibited mining within a kilometre of the boundaries of national parks and sanctuaries in Goa.
The Supreme Court has directed the Centre to notify eco – sensitive zones around national parks and sanctuaries.
