Delhi High Court notice to Centre and Delhi Government on condition of undertrial prisoners
The Delhi High Court has issued notice to the Central and Delhi governments on the deplorable conditions of undertrial prisoners in Tihar Jail.
The Apex Court was hearing a PIL drawing Court’s attention to the scheduled tribe prisoners all over the country, particularly the condition of women among them. In this regard, the apex court had sent references to high court to decide the issue. The Delhi High Court has already been dealing with two PILs relating to ensuring minimum human rights to inmates of Tihar Jail.
The bench was earlier informed that due to a large number of undertrials put together in unhygienic conditions, they are being affected by numerous deadly diseases in the jail premises. Other common diseases in Tihar jail premises are – TB, HIV/AIDS, hepatitis, and typhoid to name a few.
